For years, my husband and I kept having the same conversation: maybe it was time to move.
Our house in Glen Mills was in a great location, and we loved the neighborhood. The problem was that the house itself no longer fit the way our family lived.
The kitchen felt too closed off. We didn’t have enough useful storage, some of the rooms weren’t being used the way we wanted, and we had started imagining what it would be like to have a little more space.
Every time we looked at homes for sale, though, we kept coming back to the same thought: we didn’t actually want to leave Glen Mills. We just wanted our house to work better.
That’s what eventually led us to explore home remodeling in Glen Mills.
The More We Looked, the More Remodeling Made Sense
At first, I assumed remodeling would be too complicated and expensive to make sense compared with moving.
Then we started thinking about all the costs and inconveniences that come with buying another home. Even if we found something we liked, there was no guarantee that the kitchen would be right, the bathrooms would be what we wanted, or that the layout would work for our family.
We were essentially looking for another house with the same problems solved.
Remodeling gave us the opportunity to solve those problems ourselves.
Instead of asking, “What house can we find?” we started asking, “What would we change about the house we already have?”
That was a much better question.
We Started With How We Actually Use the House
The first thing we learned was that we didn’t need to chase every remodeling trend.
We needed to figure out what was frustrating us.
The kitchen was the obvious starting point. We wanted more functional counter space, better storage, and a layout that made it easier for everyone to be in the kitchen at the same time.
We also wanted the finished space to feel like it belonged in the house rather than looking like something completely separate had been dropped into it.
That became an important part of the planning process.
We weren’t interested in remodeling just for the sake of having a newer kitchen. We wanted an improvement that would still make sense years from now.
Choosing a Remodeling Contractor
Finding the right contractor ended up being one of the most important parts of the project.
We spoke with E. Wallace Construction and immediately appreciated that the conversation wasn’t only about materials and finishes. We were able to talk through what we wanted the space to accomplish and what made sense for the house.

The Renovation Changed More Than the Kitchen
Once construction was underway, I started realizing how much a well-planned renovation can affect the rest of a home.
Improving one area made us reconsider how we used the surrounding spaces. Storage became easier to organize. The kitchen became a place where people naturally gathered instead of an area everyone seemed to pass through.
Even the way we entertained changed.
Before the renovation, having people over often meant trying to work around the limitations of the space. Afterwards, everything felt much more natural.
The house hadn’t changed location. The neighborhood hadn’t changed.
But the way we experienced our home had changed considerably.
Communication Made the Process Easier
One thing I particularly appreciated throughout the project was communication.
Remodeling your home is disruptive. There is no getting around that. Having construction happening around you means making decisions, adjusting routines, and dealing with the occasional unexpected detail.
Consistent communication makes a big difference in that situation.
Knowing what was happening, what was coming next, and how the project was progressing made the entire experience feel much more manageable.
That was especially important to us because this wasn’t a cosmetic weekend project. We were making meaningful changes to our home.
We Stopped Looking at Houses
The funny thing is that we haven’t seriously looked at another house since finishing the renovation.
We got what we were originally searching for without moving.
Our house now has the space, functionality, and style we wanted, but we also kept everything we already loved about living in Glen Mills.
Looking back, I think we were approaching the problem backward.
We thought we needed a new house because our current house wasn’t working for us. What we actually needed was a house designed around the way we live today.
For other Glen Mills homeowners considering a renovation, that’s probably the biggest lesson I took from the experience.
